HIKUTAIA NOTES.

(By Scrutator). MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS. The annual meeting of householders called for April 25 lapsed, the attendance being insufficient to form the required committee, even though everyone present had been elected. This indifference argues either entire confidence in the old cpmimittee, or a Jacß of interest in the welfare of our future citizens. In the former case a compliment is paid to those who accepted office last year in the latter eventuality the district cannot be congratulated bn its "live” citizens. POSTAL AND TELEPHONIC. Some time ago the Postal Department decided to remove the post office from Karangahake and re-ierect the building here. The material has been assembled on the site’ —a most c'oh.venieqt one at •the junction of the cross-roads, and adjacent to the hotel —and the* work of erection has started. It is, anticipated that a telephono service will be established as soon as the structure is completed!, a promise to that effect, it is said, having been made by "the powers that be.” PERSONAL, Mrs W. H. Alley, Messrs W. K. and R. Morrison, and P. Reid returned to Hikutaia after a brief visit tp the city, Mr W. Norton, the popular manager of the cheese factory, is confined to bed with a severe attack of jaundice. ! At present colds are very prevalent, especially among the juveniles, whoso necessary absence is prejudicial to the school attendance. ' FOOTBALL DANCE. The footballers held a most successful dance arid euchre tournament in the Hikutaia Hall on Thursday evening last. A good. floor, excellent music, and a capital supper condu'ce 1 to the general enjoyment of the large number present. The prizes for the euchre were won by Mr Miller (Paeroa), and Miss L. Alley, the latter winning the tie played against her mother, Mrs AH- Alley. Mr F. Hill acted as M.C, MEMORIAL GATES FUND. Messrs Woods and Jennings,, of Paeroa. have generously agreed to donate the free proceeds of a special picture entertainment to be held in the hall on the evening of the 4th to the fund .which, is being raised to erect gates at the entrance to the Alley Memorial Park, in memory of 1 the Hikutaia boys who served in the I Great War. Mr R. Lowry has kindly offered to erect the posts, on which will be placed marble tablets bearing the names of all concerned. The effort of Messrs Woods and Jennings, it is expected, will help the fund considerably. \ SCHOOL PICNIC AND SPORTS. Favoured with fine weather, the school picnic and sports came off successfully on Friday last. The children were present in full number, while a large number of parents showed their sympathy with -“the movement by being wel) represented on the grounds, of which Mrs J. Corbett was kind enough to allow the use. The committee and the teachers were indefatigable in their efforts to promote the general enjoyment, and succeeded so well that everything went off with vim and spirit. The commissariat pepartment left ■’little if anything, to be desired, and it was a happy and if tired, lot of little ones that reluctantly left the grounds about half-past four. To meet the expenses entailed, local subscriptions cam?, in .well, and these were supplemented by generous donations in money or in kind received from the following well-lwish-ers in Paeroa and Thames: Messrs de Castro, Mahony, Wells and Sons, Say, Hales, and the Farmers’ Trading Co., all of Paeroa: Messrs Cullen, Malin, Renshaw, Dobb, Carson, Lewis, Isaac Brown and Son, C. H. Whitehead, and J.- Galloway, of Thames. The various racfe and competitions brought out “lajrge fields/’ the most popular events undoubtedly being the bun worry, the medjey races, the re- 1 lay races, and the school champion- i ships for boys and girls. Thelast- | named were almost walk-bvers for I the winners. Both D.are and Lucy J Robinson, who won each distance so | easily that interest settled in the | winners of the second and third places the undoubted superiority of 'the “champions” being a foregone conclusion.

The committee and the teachers are to be very highly congratulated on the success of their efforts;, which entailed considerable time, and thought. The encomiums passed upon them will prove io all concerned a decided solatium, while the success attending their efforts will more than reward them for their trouble. Appended is a list of the winners :
