ROTOKOHU RATEPAYERS.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER
A meeting of members of the Rotokohu Ratepayers’ Association; was held on Friday night, Mr W. F. Johnstone presiding.
The secretary (Mr W. D. Keys) read letters from the Minister q? Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates), the substance of which was published in the “Gazette” recently/and to which the seccrtary hady in <he interim, suitably replied. - • The secretary reported that comprehensive representatipns were being compiled by i.the' committee; set up to put the requests of the Association before the Minister. < . .
Mr V. Young, suggested that a deputation wait upon Mr L. May (District Engineer), to impress upon him the desirability of the being shown the whole Rotokohu area very, fully, it was advisable to show the Minister every part of .the district, as an association, and not merely from the point of view of interested individuals. .
Messrs McLeod and Chamberlain stressed the point that as the Pereniki bend area was to be sacrificed, it was imperative that the land should be bought by the Government at the earliest possible date ; there was a grave danger, especially in view of the effect of the stop-banking on the left bank, the settlers being caught in a trap if another flood should come, and of being drowned, being unable to manage a boat in the strength of the flood current. When the stop-bank was completed the Pereniki ponding area would be under four feet of water in the highest part, which would 'mean ten feet in the low-lying places. Mr, Young’s suggestion that M" May be interviewed was acted upon.
