RIVERS COMMISSION.
LEGAL EXPENSES. ABLE COUNSEL. Legal expenses were di&ussed by the Paeroa Borough Council at the general meeting last evening. Referring to the costs oil the Rivers Commission the Mayor remarked that the work of the Borough solicitor (Mr. J. L'. Hanna) was second to none, aril the report of the Commission tore ample testimony to his representations. He . was also the lowesb-paid counsel at the Commission.
Cr. Marshall said Mr, Hanna had done all the/Council’s legal work last year for the small sum of £l2 13s sd. Cr. Edwards said that Mr Hanifa’s fee was £5 5s perday, while some of the other counsel were paid as high as 25 guineas per day. » Cr. McDonald: Mr Hanna went to considerable personal expense .and no end Of trouble to" collect data tp fight the Borough Council’s case. It was unanimously decided to pay Mr Hanna £5 5s per day fpr the 21 days he was engaged at the sittings.
