SPORTS PICNIC.

I —r* — OUTING AT TURUA. i THE LADIES’ DAY OFF. By way of appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the ladies of Turua to the Hauraki Plains. Athletic and Sports Club when it held its annual sports gathering on February 9, the club’s executive decided tlhat the ladies should have some reward. The committee thought that a picnic would suit the case, and this was he'd on Saturday, when the ladies had I a day off, the whole of the work,' ■ catering included, being done by the male members of the club., [ The day was ah ideal one until, late in the afternoon', when ominous dark • clouds appeared in the sky and rain 1 began to fall. The children were amused with games, races, and tugs-of-war. while chopping events, races, ' and tugs of-war for the ladies and men were items pf importance on the programme. • ■ * ; The ladies' chop attracted a great I amount of interest, and judging by the way some df the Competitors wielded the axe they had good praci tical knowledge, of the art of chopping. ! The refreshment arrangements were well carried out by v the men, and a threatening storjn dispersed a very enjoyable outing. The following were the results of the athletic events: THE CHOPPING. Maiden Chop (15in block). —J. Clark 1, P. Ingley 2. Ladies' Chop (9in blocks on fiat). — Mrs Williams 1, Mrs Wallace 2, Mrs Dally 3. This event produced a very close finish. Mrs Wallace cut her block through and ceased chopping, but evidently, thinking it required another blow to open the block up, she again took up the axe and with another hit opened up -the wood. In the meantime, however, Mrs Williams had completed her block and was awarded first place. Committeemen’s Relay Chop (15in blocks)., —G. Gray and F. Olsen 1, F. Stephens and W. Elvin 2. Open Relay Chop (15in blocks). — Cbtworthy and Schmidt 1, Buckley and Gray 2. TUGS-OF-WAR. Ladies^ —Married beat single in the first two pulls. Men.—Married beat single. School Children,—Boys beat girls in two pulls out of three. RUNNING AND CYCLING, 100yds (open).—A. Ansford 1, W. Nash 2, R. Kerby 3. 220yds (open)..—Kerby 1, Ansiford 2, Hart 3. * Bicycle Race (one mile).—W. Dally 1, W. Hearne 2. CHILDREN’S RACES. Girls.—s to 7 years, Dorothy Davies 1 Doris Courtney 2, Lily Elvip 3 ; 7 to 10 years, D. Olsen 1, Edna Aberhart 2, Phyllis Farley 3 ; 10 to 13 years, Rita Boneham 1, K.
