TAURANGA PAEROA AUCKLAND.

THE AUTHORISED RAILWAY. . MINISTER’S AID SOUGHT. The important matter of the Paeroa Pokeno railway was brought before the Minister, of Lands (Hon. D. H. Guthrie) not only in Paeroa;, but from nearly every centre on the Hau- • raki Plains during the Minister's visit this week. The following statement was submitted by Hh Worship the Mayor of Paeroa (Mr P. E. Brenan), through the Town Clerk, Mr P. C. curler: " • - PROPOSED RAILWAY.. ; Paeroa-Pokeno’ Railway.—ln com : mon with many other local authorities and cnambers of commerce and various railway leagues, this deputation strenuously urges that money be placed on the Estimates for this .important work. In this connection we would particularly like to point out that, apart altogether from the exceedingly rich area of country thatthe railway will open up(, the serious congestion from Frankton to Auckland is in itself a sufficient reasonfor the pushing on of this line, as by' so doing the congestion would be con-' siderably eased, and. at the latest?' this portion of the East Coast line should be finished as soon as* if not sooner than, the Wai hi-Tauranga-Wliakatane-portion. To put. the extratraffic from the latter portion over the Frankton 1 Auckland section- ini addition to its present heavy load .would seriously endanger, its efficiency. „ REPLY RE RAILWAY.' - The Minister, replying on the Pae-. roa-Pokeno railway question, said ■ htg would submit the matter tp the Jfin| ister of Public Works, whose policS was tn complete existing lines der to justify expenditure- already made and to make the lines reproductive. . ' Mr Poland: Six miles, of the. line has been authorised and £5OOO edRAILWAY JUNCTION. Mr E. W. PorritU president of the P-iproa Chamber off Commerce, submitted the following : ‘ Paeroa-Pokeno Railway.—That the Public Works Department be urged to consider the .advisability of a s'Vght deviation of the Paeroa-iPokeno railway, so as to cross the Waihou River near the end of Mill Road!, instead of>, at the Puke. This would make the junction of the PaeroaPokeno line with the Frankton Junc-tiori-Thameg main line near, the present junction with the Waihi line, affording ampleropm for station and shunting yards, and also lessen the cost of cartage of goods from the station to Paeroa township!, and vice versa. ■ . -

Further advantages, of the suggested deviation are: ' (1) Ample room for future railway requirements; (2) close proximity l of the station to the town;. (3) more swinging room for steamers and other vessels in the basin at Ngahina wharf ; (4) permitting the continued future use of the opening span for vessels at the Puke Bridge, and navigation of Ohinemuri River; (5) do away with the necessity for the disadvantagous cutting up of a number of small properties between the present •station and Puke bridge; (6) less cost for compensation for the land required to be taken; (7),..d0 away with the disadvantage of shunting operations or. a’ curve and between streets in the .town; X 8) save the heavy pull out from the station on the up grade to the Ohinemnri River railway bridge, which will be increased when the railway bridge is raised two feet, as proposed by the Public Works Department.; (9) one junction, which would be near the station, instead of two separated by some distance. 1 . - ' The Minister also promised to forward Mr Porritt’s statement to the Minister of Public Works.
