ngatea. the school. The visit of Dr. David and Nurse Serey to the Ngate.a school on Thursday was taken advantage of by the local school committee to again stress the necessity for additional accommodation. The committee was represented by Mr G. T. Davidson, who pointed otu to the doctor the congested conditions, which the committee considered unhealthy. He recognised the fact that the Education Board sent the doctor to the schools to look after the health of the children, and the speaker was pleased to see the doctor, but 1 Mr Davidson thought it inconsistent to have a school the size of Ngatea’s with so many children crowded into it and at, the same time a doctor coming round, yet nothing being done in the way of enlargements. The difficulties the teachers were labouring under should also he taken into consideration. The doctor told Mr Davidson that he could see the school was somewhat overcrowded, but it was a matter of finance with the Board, which •> at present did not have the money. It was therefore not altogether, the Board's fault- He instanced thercity schools, which wer.e so greatly overcrowded as to be absolutely detrimental to health. Those. cases were more urgent than Ngatea’s. As far as his report was concerned, he would do what was right'for the district. Mr Davidson maintained that in the cities the children’s homes were near the schools, while in the country some children .had -several miles to ride, and often in we.t saddles. At Ngatea the shelter-shed was being used as a class room, and there was no place to put saddles on a wet day. The position at Ngatea was, therefore worse than it at first appeared. The doctor thought the committee was quite justified in requesting enlargements to the school the only excuse for delay being shortage of money on the part of the Education Board. - Mr Davidson asked the doctor if any concession could be made flor the medical treatment of scjiool children. The doctor replied that that was not the case .at present, but he thought bhat a nurse from the dental department might possibly be sent to the various schools and dental treatment given free. Treatment for all’ other ailments must be paid for. PipTURES. At the Ngatea Hall Committee meeting on Saturday evening a letter was received from Mr Hamilton stating that he wished to make biweekly screenings, and that he would probably install a permanent plant. , Mr Hayward thought pictures once a week was quite sufficient and moved that the committee call ffor tenders for the lease of the hall for picture entertainments once a week for 12 months. Mr Jamieson seconded, and the motion was carried. PERSONAL. Miss E. Hilford, local postmistress, returned from her holiday on Saturday.
