THEFTS AT PAEROA.
MONEY AND CLOTHING. ROBBERIES AT BOARDINGHOUSES ACCUSED BEFORE COURT: A case of much local interest was heard at the Paeroa Court this morning, when a maji named Richard Thomas Carroll was charged by the Police with, having, on or about March. 23, stolen from Alberti Sims tlie sum of £2O. The circumstance's .are that the accused had secured lodgings at “Montrose House,” Paeroa, Sims occupying the same rpom. Carroll got up early in t,he morning, staging that he wanted to catch, the first tlrain for Te Aroha, and to take the return one for Thames.. After breakfast he went to the railway station and purchased a ticket for Frankton, cashing a £5 note to pay for it. % Upon rising from bed Sims searched his pockets for his money, which was missing, a sum of £26 10s which he had in one parcel having' disappeared. T,hls money was in the form of four £5 notes. He immediately informed the proprietress (Mrs Davidson) of his loss, and she straightway became suspicious of the early-.de-parting lodger. She rang up the Te Aroha" police, informing them of the circumstances. The Te Aroha police communicated with. Constable McClinchy, of Paeroa, who gave instructions that the man must be searched. This was done, and four pounds and some silver was found on him, amounting to £5 less the cost of his ticket. On further communication with Paeroa, instructions were given to make another and more complete search. The man was therefore divested of his clothing, and three £5 notes were found in his underclothing. • The accused was further charged with having, on March 22, stolen from the Commercial Hotel, Paeroa, an overcoat, the property of Nicholas Letice. valued at £6. Constable McClihchy only got word of the coat theft last evening. The Te Aroha police were again communicated with, but the accused was not wearing the coat. The ’phone was brought into use again, and instructions jrere given to search a bag in accused’s possession, and the missing coat was found therein. The accused was brought up and formally remanded for eight days.
