PAEROA GOLF CLUB.
THE YEAR’S WORKING. ANNUAL REPORT. The following report was submitted to the Paeroa Golf Club at the fourteenth, annual meeting by the secretary, Mr I. J. Towers : — " The committee ha's much pleasure in presenting the fourteenth annual report, and have to congratulate the members on a successful season. / The club was unfortunate in losing prior to and early in the season a number of its members, including many of its foremost players, but 26 new' members were admitted to the club, making a membership of 81, an enormous increase over the previous year. During fire year the club sustained a severe loss through the death, of Mr Spiers, who was one of bur foremost players. Inter Club Matches. —I nterclub matches- were played against the Waihi, Morrinsville, and Thames players. During the season ypur executive arranged matches between a representative team (ladies and men) from tlhe Goldfields and the Hamilton Club. These fixtures should help to raise the standard of golf in our district, as the Hamilton players are amongst New Zealand’s best. , Club Competitions.—The practice of holding an official, closing day was revived this year at the instigation of Mrs J. Reid, who provided, afternoon. tea. The prizes won in club competitions were presented on this occasion. An Ingenious Inference. — A. special general meeting on 18th November, 1921>, in the Soldiers’ Club, 16 members being present, to consider all known matters of dispute. The committee feel that the small attendance is an assurance from the very great majority of the members of their continued confidence.
Tournaments. — Owing to the weather- the tournaments this ■season were, from a financial point of, view, a disappointment, although from the point of view from golfing they were all that could be desired. It is from these tournaments that the club has been able to show a good credit! balance at the end of the last several seasons. The committee lecommend to this meeting that this year for the June tournament,. and, if necessary, the Labour Day tournament, the trephines and luncheon and afternoon tea, etc., be donated by members, ■so that expenses to the club o? the tournament will be nil, and all takings, which will be a clear profit, will provide money io pay for the enlarging of the putting greens. The executive also wish to hear members’ opinions as to the advisability, of a two days’ tournament, and the date of ‘the October tournament. The thanks of the club are due to the ladies who so capably catered for these tournaments,, especially to Mrs Peacock at the June tournament, and to Mrs Hanna at the Labour Day Tournament.
Financial. —Owing to <ibe increased cost of labour and material the expenses for the season were considerably higher than tpose of previous seasons, and owing to the smallness of the tournament profits the club’s income has been less than was reasonably expected. The club commenced the year with a credit balance of £2O 9s 8d and received £2l 10s 6d in entrance fees, winch should be transferred under the existing rule,. Increases in wages alone this year amount to £25 17s 9d, and other items bring the total increases to £4B 8s 3d, all of which are unavoidable. It will therefore be necessary to consider seriously the motion in relation to transfer of entrance fees. The outgoing committee think that, the club will have to consider the matter of increasing the membership subscriptions, especially in view of the fact 'that the larger greens will incur ,a further increase in the cost of green keeping. This meeting will be called on to consider the making of the Golf Ball an annual fixture, and this will bring up the matter of dealing with the profit of some £7 made on the last ball. So far this amount is held In trust for the ball committee pending a decision of the matter. The Links.;—The links, especially the greens, have improved during the yaar. The condition of our course and greens drew favourable remarks from the tournament visitors.' Thp committtee .have lot, a contract' for, the enlarging of the greens to twice their present area. A start has been made on this work, and the enlarged greens wilj be ready for play at the beginning of the new season, during April. Pro-coaching. — Morrice’s connection with the club has been severed, and the committee is endeavouring to secure another coach to fill his position. The services of Mr Janies Watt, who was for ten years coach in charge of Herctaunga Club and at the present time is in charge of the Titirangi Links, arc available at a retainer of £75 per annum and coaching fee of 4s per lesson. Your committee have made seaching enquiries into the capabilities of Mr Watt and are satisfied that he is a first class man and capable of filling the position of coach to a club of even the size of Hamilton. It was the committee’s opinion that five chibs could be obtained who would pay £l5- per year each as a retainer, making up a total of £75, but in this matter they have up to the present time only succeeded in obtaining the consent of four clubs inclusive of our own. The rise in the price per (Continued in next coluram)
Continued from previous Column, lesson is, in the committee’s opinion, well merited, in so much that we consider that Watt is infinitely more worth 4s per lesson than Morrice was worth 3s. ' Efficient coaching is the key to all success of a Golf Club from th© point of view of play. Thanks; —The thanks of the cub are due to the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for the use of their dining roams and other accessories during the season, to the donors of trophies for club competitions, and to Mrs Reid for providing afternoon tea on closing day, and to other lady memir bers for -assisting with afternoooh tea ; also to the proprietor of The Hauraki Plains Gazette ” tor publishing the results of matches, etc.
