WAITEKAUBI. FROM MINING TO FARMING. Those who knew Waitekauri in ■the mining days, when the coaches carried the numerous passengers, to and from the mining town, would never realise that it would eventually develop into a farming district, but. such seems the case. One is suddenly struck with amazement after leaving Waikino at the improvements that are taking place.. All along the road on either side, through Waitekauri and on past the Golden Cross, are neat little •farms with a cream-stand at the gate. The last piece of unoccupied land was taken up by Mr F. Butcher, about twelve months ago, and he is getting quite a large piece' under cultivation, with the intention of supplying the N.Z. Dairy Co. next season. A little farm worth visiting is Mr G. Morland’s. He has a very fine herd of cows, which averaged over 3001 b of butter-fat last season. His cows are in feed to their knees, and are in great condition. He, is a great believer of breeding his own dairy cows.' His motto evidently is • “Feed, breed, and weed.” He goes in very largely also for breeding pigs, having now close on (200. They are a very fine, quick-growing lot of pigs. FLOOD DAMAGE. The last two floods did a lot of damage to the district, especially to the Waitekauri-Golden Cross Road. A large piece of road between the river and cliff was completely washed away. The main bridge was also badly damaged. The settlers on past Waitekauri are not in a very enviable position, as those near the Cross can only got out. on horseback.
