THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 1922. PAEROA AND NAVIGATION.

<» Figures contained in locally directed publicity matter which appeared in the “N.Z. Herald’’ yesterday substantiate in a striking way the arguments the “Gazette” has been advancing recently in favour of a strong agitation urging the Government to dredge the Ohinemuri River. The ideal to be aimed at is not only to retain what navigation facilities we possess, but to restore what has been lost through wilful neglect and the misappropriation of moneys originally intended to pay for dredging operations. The article referred to reads as follows:

Paeroa’s railway communications possess an advantage regarding tariff, preferential tariff prevailing where the railway meets with the competition of cheap water traffic. As an illustration of the great saving that this special tariff effects to Paeroa, the following figures are interesting : During the last ten years the Northern Steamship Company landed 54,127 tons of goods at Paeroa at an average rate of 12s 8d per ton, the cost being £34',280. To land the same quantity of cargo in Paeroa dirent by rail with the existing preferential tariff of 25s per ton it would c.ost the consignees £67|,658, or £6765 per annum, as against £3428 per annum by water. But, if there were ho local tariff, which would be the case were the Waihou River not navigable, it would cost tb land the same, quantity of cargo, at 50s 8d per ton, £137,121, or £13,712 per annum. In view of the Railway Department’s practice it, is almost pertain that the preferential tariff will be continued in use on the new railway. Consequently Paeroa will, benefit by a preferential tariff as against the ordinary tariff for the reduced 45 miles which the new railway [Pae-roa-Pokeno] will effect.
