PAEROA-AUCKLAND SHIPPING FARES.

Increases in the cost of running boats obliged the Northern Steamship Company, Ltd, among others, to raise fares. It has been remarked by a local business man that the fares were raised on all routes without regard for any special conditions that might obtain on certain routes. He pointed out that the passenger traffic by boat from Paeroa to Auckland was very small,’ and that as the boats carried goods in substantial quantities, and had the passenger accommodation going to waste, it would pay the company to reduce fares to stimulate passenger traffic. From the point of view of community interest, it is desirable that every inducement should be given for representatives of outside firms to visit Paeroa and make it their headquarters for working the surrounding centres of Thames, Te Aroha, Morrinsville, and Waihi. The more publicity the town gets, and. the greater the number of visitors, the better will the geographical advantages of the place become known to the outside world. Once it was thoroughly understood that Paeroa is the railway, road, and river centre for this part of the Auckland province, new businesses and industries would follow, all making for general progress and prosperity.
