SUNSHADES.
Siri—With reference to my application for permission to erect sunshades over two windows abutting the footpath in Normanby Road. I desire tp point Out that shades similar to those desired by me are permitted in Queen Street, Auckland. They are hinged to the wall, and can be raised or removed according to the weather conditions, arid give an improved, appearance to any building. I regret that I cannot compliment the Council upon its good taste or discretion in refusing my application.; Evidently, as Cr. Marshall puts it, there is no desire to the other side of the street. They apparently are content with the effects around the church. Standardisation may be very necessary for verandahs and bal-t conies likely .to be walked upon, but does this standardisation make for improvement and progress, or for a condition of stagnation ? Perhaps, however, the gentleman referred to has never seen this modern window adornment,, ind is therefore excusable. H. KANE. ‘
