ENTERTAINING THE VISITORS. THE. POSITION AT, TURUA. A meeting of Turn a residents, convened by the library committee, was held in z the Victoria Hall on Monday evening. There was a fair attendanceMr H. Grundy occupied the chair and Mr A. P. Gardiner acted as secretary. Mr Gardiner reported that, at. a meeting on the previous Monday it had been decided to meet the executive ’ committee of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union with reference to accommodating and entertaining the parliamentarians on their proposed tour of the Hauraki Plains. He had seen eacli of the Farmers’ Union executive committee (Messrs McMillan, Henry, Rogers, Gray, Bennett, Newman, and the secretary, Mr Green), and all but one had promised ' I to meet the residents’ delegates on Saturday evening at 8 o’clock. On Saturday mornihg Mr Green had inthe speaker that four of the exf iiitive committee had definitely decided not to meet the residents’ delegates if the residents’ chairman was present. The residents’ delegates, ■ Messrs Grundy, McLean, and the speaker, decided, as their instruc- ‘ tions were definite, that their plans could not be altered,, and notified Mr Green (Farmers’ Union secretary) that they would be at the place appointed at 8 p.m. The residents’ delegates had kept the appointment; and waited till 8 15 pjnv, but none of the Farmers’ Union delegates arrived. Three of the union delegates, coni eluded the -speaker, had been quite prepared to meet the residents’ representatives. The report was received with practically no comment. Mr Gardiner proposed that tihe representatives go ahead with the en-_ tertainment plan as far as the proposed banquet was concerned and report to 'a further meeting at a date to be decided later, and to which all interested would be invited. The moi tion was seconded and carried. Tt was decided to form a committee to investigate ways and means for and to ascertain the probable cost of a banquet. The following were elected to the committee : Messrs P. Casein, T., White, G. Porteous, A. Jensen, Davis, Goodsell, R. McLean, IL Grundy, and A. P; Gardiner.
