GRASS SEED SALE.

* THE annual opportunity. 'j. JONES. & CO-, AUCKLAND. The great annual grass seed sale that has become a fixture, that cons ducted by Messrs J. Jones and Co., corner City Markets, Auckland, will be held this year on Thursday, February 23, commencing at 10 a.m. ' No farmer need have any hesitation in buying the seeds advertised in td-day’s “Gazette,” for they are guaranteed of high germinating test, clean and reliable, and the firm will make up any mixture of seeds required, and will fulfill orders in any quantity at sale prices, the condl; tions of the sale being the same as those which obtained last year. TEST OF EXPERIENCE. Although the seeds disposed of at last year’s sale were not.sold with an absolute guarantee, nevertheless they might well have been so announced, as the results have since proven. By way of satisfying themselves as to the' quality, the firm wrote to a number of farmers who had bought last year, and out of over two hundred received there was not one complaint—a very fine tribute indeed to the quality of the seeds. Several of the letters which a representative of the “Gazettp” .perused were distinctly complimentary. Win or lose, Messrs Jones and Co abide by the watchword “Quality.” Some of the grass seed sold by the firm was for the use of returned soldiers, and was officially tested, but whereas Messrs Jones and Co. claimed only 80 per cent, germination, the Agricultural Department found that it was 100 per cent i—the possible. The "Gazette” interviewer asked a principal of the firm how they fared when, by sticking to quality every time, they might not be able to compete with tlie prices asked for somewhat inferior produce. “That sometimes happens,” he said, “bat we just keep on the high road of! unimpeach-, able quality and good service in every respect, and a customer or two Who may be temporarily lost always comes, back to us. They find, fob instance, that poor seed is dear kt a gift, because their labour is more or less lost, since they cannot .get results.” ENORMOUS POULTRY SALES. Being curious as to' the extraordinarily large, number of poultry pens, the information was given, backed by documents, that during’ Christmas week 25,000 head of poultry were disposed of. At ordinary times the number averages 4000 per week. A tremendous quantity of fruit is also sold, 25,000 cases having Sound new owners within three days,. And this is the volume of trade done by a firm on 'a very humble scale, ar. whose present status rests upoffi fair-dealing and prompt business methods. There cannot be much wrong with the pfe’sonal character of the principals of a firm who have employees of 18 and .20 years’ service still in their employThe cold figures produced from the ledgers and account sales books of a firm like Messrs J. Jones and Co. are tp the mind that sees'aJJ that they imply, Invested with a living romance of merchandising.
