z MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Thames County Council was held at Thames on' Wednesday. Present: Messrs H. Lowe (chairman), j> McCormick, W. Brunton, G. T. Blackett, P. Faithful, R. Cox, E. Nicol; and the clerk, 1 Mr H. T. G. McElroy. . PURIRI BRIDGE. The clerk of the Hauraki Plains County Council, (Mr E. Walton), wrote intimating that :his council was agreeable to a conference at Ngatea with Thames in reference to the proposed Puriri bridge.—Agreed to. DATE OF SALES CLASHING. The manager of the Farmers’ Cooperative Auctioneering Co., Ltd. (Mr W. H. Hume), replying to the Council’s request that the date of the Hikutaia sales should, be changed in order not to clash with Council meeting days, said his company could not very well change its dates as the calendars had been distributed some time ago.—Received. WHANGAMATA WHARF. Mr T. W. Rhodes, MiP. (Thames), wired asking what was the position in regard to the Whangamata wharf. The Department was under the impression that the project had. been abandoned, and the grant, therefore, was not repeated upon the Estimates. The clerk said application had been made fbr an increased amount. \ . Cr. Nicol said Mr F. E. PcweU, C.E., had prepared plans of the wharf. — Plans to be secured for next meeting. PURIRI ROAD. Mr Lon. Maxwell, Puriri, wrote pointing out that the water-tables near Mcßeth’s required cleaning out; the road required blinding, and was too narrow. Cr. Nicol said the road was really frightful. Cr Faithful considered that a deviai tion should be made, as it was not possible to do much with the old road; a fresh would sweep the top away again.
Cr. Nicol said the worst portion was from Mcßeth’s to Maxwell’s. Or. Faithful said Mr Maxwell had stated that he could fix the road up somewhat within a week. —Left to Crs. Faithful and Cox to attend to, with power to act. DRAINAGE TENDERS. Owing to the flood intervening and altering conditions the Council decided not to accept any drainage tenders, but to call for amended tenders. IMPOUNDING ACT. Messrs Neumegen and Neumegen, Auckland, advised the Council that its ranger had power to impound cattle "found wandering at large, or straying in or lying about or tethered in any road or other place of public resort.” The ranger, therefore, was entitled to impound cattle wandering on Tapu Flat. A place that the public resorted to, whether by right or not, came within the meaning of the Act. OMAHU ROAD. Reference to the deep wheel ruis in the Omahu Road from the main road to the station was referred' to by Cr. Brunton. The Council decided to request Messrs Hoyle Bros, to in the ruts, which were allegedly'caused by the firm’s cartage operations. WHAREPOA ROAD. Cr. Brunton again referred to the state of the Wharepoa Road. The chairman said there was a Government subsidy of £250 for that road. It was the through road to the Plains and Auckland, and should be attended to. The subsidy could be doubled by taking £250 from loan money. Cr. McCormick thought the best, metal should be used, that from Kau,Omahu quarry metal was ■too soft. ‘ It was decided to spend the £5OO on the road, from the railway tp the cemetery ; also that the other portion ofi the road, from the railway to the river, should have the ruts fll'led in. Cr. Brunton favoured calling alteri nate tenders for Omahu and Kauaeranga metal. —Agreed to. Crs. Brunton, Cox, and the chairman were empowered to act in the matter of tenders. WHANGAMATA ROAD.
Or. Nicol reported that a portion of the Whangamata-Hikutaia road had become impassable in places.—Decided to effect repairs; also to have certain bridges in Hikuai district repaired. t ; A HIKUTAIA ROAD. Cr. Brunton supported an applica-i tion to have Onetia Road (Hikutaia) formed. Cr. Cox approved, stating that although money was short the cosi woti’d not sink the ship.
