WAIKINO. •FAREWELL CONCERT. ’ On Friday, 13th inst., a smoke coni cert was given in the Victoria Hall to Mr W. Maiden, w:ho for over 23 years, was employed in tihe battery. For a I good many years he held the position I ofi foreman, and. was well esteemed by all who knew him. At about 8 p.m. the function opened, the chairman be-ing-Mr J. H. G. Banks (superintendent (/ the Waikino battery), who gave the first toast, "The King,” which was duly honoured. Several songs were rendered by Messrs Quin, Trott, and E. Johnson. During the evening the guest was presented with a roll of notes, by t]he chairman, who. ip well-chosen words expressed the, feelings of those present. Mr Maiden suitably replied. ' The accompanist for the evening was Mr Cater. WAITAKARURU. HAYMAKING. The settlers in the Waitakaruru district arc now completing their haymaking, and stacks are large, both in numbers and in size. Never before has Waitakaruru had so much feed, and consequently there 'has been some very good hay crops. / r SCHOOL FLAG POLE. . The school committee is calling for tenders for the erection ojf a flag-pole in the school grounds. A considerable sum pf money has been raised by a picture entertainment, the success: of which was largely contributed to by Mr Hamilton screening the programme at a. minimum charge. LIGHTING STREAM ENTRANCE. The Marine Department, if is said, has decided to put two lights at the entrance of the Waitakaruru stream. KAIHERE. KAIHERE LANDING. Judging from the text of a pile of correspondence to and from the Coin-t missioner of Lands .and the Chief Drainage Engineer, read at the Kaihere Farmers’ Uniop meeting on Saturday, it is apparent that that b'rahlch of the union was one of the chief agitators to have the name "Ng'arua Landing” changed to “Kaihere Landing.”
