BOROUGH BUSINESS.
MONTHLY REPORTS. The follo.wing monthly reports were received by the Paeroa Borougn Council last evening from the various committees: FINANCE, “Your Committee begs to report that during the mon'.n the revenue has amounted to £lOO5 12s 7d, and expenditure to £96 Is 6d. Including the attached accounts, which your Committee recommends for payment, the balance on the district fund ac- J count amounts to £532 Os Id. I 10 Per Cent. Penalty. There have been one or two verbal applications from ratepayers to have the 10 per cent, penalty written off owing to various reasons, su'ch as Waving a cheque written out before the due date, but not having paid the money into the office. We would point out, however, that the 10 per dent, penalty is to all intents and purposes a rate, and it is quite beyond the power of the Council to remit same, once it is put on, and the town clerk lias been instructed to advise all ratepayers so applying that the Council has no power to remit the ten per cent, penalty on rates. Rates ini Arrears. Your Committee desires to draw the Council’s attention to the question 'of rate arrears overdue for the current year, a 'complete list of which is before you to-night. We ask the Council to authorise the town clerk to have circular slips printed, leaving the amount and date blank, calling upon ratepayers to pay their rates by February 11, failing which a siffffmbns is to be issued in every case, except special and proven cases of hardship or difficulty to the satisfaction of the Finance Committee. By these means we can prevent loss from unrecoverable rates, and make a determined effort to secure payment of rates before the end of the financial year.” BUILDING, “Your Committee -begs to report that during the month the following applications have been received : W. Cull.eri, for permission 'to erect a building of corrugated iron in William Street, outside the brick area. J. Kennedy, to erect a brick chimb ney in lieu of iron, in Princes Street. The above applications have been granted,'subject to compliance .with the by-laws, and .we ask your endorsement for same R. Whitten, for permission to erect a washhouse and closet combined on his section at the corner of Miller Avenue and Towers Street We recommend that the application be granted, subject to the building not being used as a residence, and in conformity with the by-laws. E. E. Gillman 1 , tfor permission to erect two shops on section facing Belmont Road, and owned by the Paeroa Engineering Co. W. M. Cullen, for permission to erect two phops facing Belmont Road, at William Street corner. We recommend that the applications of Messrs Gillman and Cullen be granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws, and in terms of the policy as laid down by the Council in August last (1920), and subject in Mr Cullen’s case to the verandah be-, ing similar to the verandah in front of the Power Board’s offices, or with a parapet similar to the Farmers’ Trading Co.’s verandah. T. H. Hale, for permission to erect a verandah in front of his sh.op in Hughbndon Street, We recommend that a permit be
I issued, subject to the present objectionable features beihg avoided by having a parapet put round the verandah,, and until the street is formed to the proper width, when the verandah will have to be altered, as at present it is not the correct width'. WORKS. “The w.ork during the past month has been mostly maintenance and repairs, together with the clearing of grass and blackberries from footpaths in tne borough. Some of the paths are very overgrown, and I would like your Council’s opinion re dealing of same. Towers Street and Miller Avenue have been repaired, and are now in good condition. It will be necessary, however, to put on a few more yards 0f metal before the winter.” DOMAIN. “I have very little to report since the last quarter expired. The Haur, aki A. and P. Show occasioned me a lot of extra work, as it was necessary to have the domain looking as well as possible. ' . -j At this season of .the year grass-i cutting takes up m.ost of my time.. This 'season much greater Interest has been taken in the various games, which has resulted in a little more time being tak,en up in preparing the lawns and greens. Below is a statement showing the time spent in various parts of the Domain for the quarter ending December 31 last: Bowls Croquet Tennis Gen.
