CONCRETE ROADS.
AUCKLAND’S FAITH IN THEM. Whilst in Auckland the Mayor of Wellington (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.) ‘ said he was interested to see the progress which had been made in the laying down of concrete roads. Whatever be the merits of this form of permanent road surfacing, the city eni gineer of Auckland and its City Council are banking, on it, for they purpose spending their latest loan (£400,000) on concrete roads. If it proves to be all they claim for it, it must effect a big saving, as the interest on such a loan would not be nearly so much as would be the case if they went on laying down ordinary macadam roads. “Councillor W. H. Bennett was quite right,” said the Mayor, “when he stated that road surface was one of those things which every local body had to experiment in themselV” es, as what suited ?pne place might be quite unsuitable for another, I found it very hot in Auckland.. One day I was there it registered 82 degrees in the shade at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, and it musti have beep hotter about midday. That would, mean that tarred macadam would not be of much use to them where heavy traffic was concerned, as it would move and wave when the tar melted. In Wellington we dp not get such temperatures, and it might be all right. As a layman I could not express an opinion as tp the utility of concrete roads, but every confidence is shown in them in Auckland, and they are going ahead with them. Those that I saw looked very well, and I saw no evidence of pot-holing anywhere.
