COUNTY WORKS.

OHINEMURI. Mr E. Shaw, county engineer, reported as follows at Wednesday’s meeting: . I Beg to report for the period ending December 21, 1921. The foreman, Mr Crawford, reports to me that the following works, have beep carried out during the month as follows 1 .* Forty cubic yards of the metal au- ■ thorised to be placed on the PaeroaTe Arpha® road for repairs has been delivered, and the balance will be put on when time will permit. -Scarifying and rolling of, Thames Rbad has been completed to, Mr Walters’ gate, leaving some <5B chains yet to be done to the boundary of tb'e Thames County. The work done by the roller is as good as one could expect owing to the shortage of metal on the road, and the great necessity of suitable blinding to make a good ’ finish. The roller is being removed to Rotokohu Road to-day, where some necessary work-is required to be done. Two hundred cubic yards of the four hundred authorised io be placed on roads in Kaimanawa riding has been, delivered, and a, progress payment is put through for this amount to-day.. The metal is first-class quality. It was found necessary to put :■ coat of , metal on a swamp some five chains in length on the Thames Road i wing to the boggy nature after the crust had been broken by scarifyingThe water extension on the Old Te Aroha Road asked for and subsidised by Mr Cullen has been completed. The pressure at this point is, very poor, owing to the distance and . the smallness of the main at the Borough end. While on this matter I would like to say that the time has come when the Council must decline further extensions until such time as larger mains have been substituted on certain portions of the service, and also until, the matter of increasing the supply at the headworks has been, fully considered. Re Thirds..: —I prepared a scheme for the expenditure of accrued thirds for the .year ending .September 30, 1921, and have forwarded the same to the Commissioner of Crown Lands for approval. The scheme for the expenditure of thirds for the half year ending 31st. March last has not yet come to hand. A 1 letter has been-re-, ceived from the Commissioner re expenditure bf thirds on the Pukekauri Road, stating that two swamps needed attending to, and enquiring if your Council will subsidise the thirds and make good. In company with the late .Public Works Department engineer, Mr Young, I made an inspection of this road for the purpose of a grant to extend same and to take over the completed road. A portion of this I refused to accept on account of the method of, construction and the liability that would be thrown on the Council
