DRAINAGE ON PLAINS.
MOVEMENT FOR LARGER BOARD. PETITION IN CIRCULATION. At a recent Farmers’ Union meeting ait Turua Mr Gray, who is chairman of the Hauraki Drainage Board, announced that it’ had been proposed to include a new area in the present Hauraki Drainage Board. The Farmers’ Union at Turua (has taken themaster up, and the following petition is at present 'in circulation :— “We 1 , the undersigned, being landholders on 'that portion of the Hauraki Plains situate between the Waihou River on the east, the Piako River on the west, tjhe Hauraki Gulf on the north, and the present southern boundaries, or thereabouts, and which contains freehold, Crown lands, and the soldiers’ settlement of Orpngo Estate, desire to petition you as to t|he formation of one large drainage board over the above area. “Our chief reasons for asking that this be done npw are |that the drainage of lands under the control of your Department witjhin this area is now practically completed, leaving only maintenance work to be carried out; that if 'the whole of the drains in the abovementioned area were worked s n conjunction, being those drains in construction by the Hauraki Drainage Board and your Department, we are convinced that it will be for the more general good and benefit of the lands within the abovementioned boundaries, tend to cheapen the carrying-ouc of maintenance Work and the cost cf administration, relieve your Department of the administration of this portion of the land in which development work is practically finished. “We feel that the abovemenjtidned area would, make an ideal drainage district for a new drainage board, situate as it is between two rivers, Which would have a complete community of interest and be most conveniently and economically administered with the best possible results from the outlet drains put in by your Department and the Hauraki Drainage Board.”
