THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1921. PLAINS DAIRYING.

When the K old Thames Valley Dairying Co., Ltd/, Board of Directors decided to build a butter factory at Ngatea, the very heart of the old swamp and peat Plains, there was much speculation amongst those in the butter industry as to the quality of butter likely to be 'produced from such conditions, where the land had been so recently drained ; indeed, some of the land is only partly drained at the present time. Although only seven months in operation the Ngatea factory is producing 35 tons of butter per week, 98 per cent, of which is for export, consequently subject to the scrutiny of the Government grader, whose returns show a striking illustration of the efficiency brought about by the introduction of the grading system and payment of cream according to quality on arrival at the factory, coupled with the keenness of practically every supplier to obtain the coveted “superfine” quality stamped on his weight docket. The powers who ordained that this Plain should be made fertile are to be congratulated on their foresight and enterprise. When the present scheme as outlined by the Government Lands Drainage Department is completed, the capacity of the Valley and Plain to provide quantity and quality of dairy produce will have no rival, acre for acre, in the Dominion.
