FARMERS’ UNION. . ■ \ v - . A meeting pf the Netherton branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was/held on Saturday night, the president (Mr R. B. Dunlop) occupying the chair. NGATEA RE-UNION. ' , Regarding the -re-union’>t Ngatea next Saturday Mr Dunlop urged a good attendance of Netherton members.* MAIL SERVICE. Mr Dunlop drew the members attention that the new bus service had no connection with the mail service. It may, jeopardise, the running pfl the mail service, as if the Paeroa tender were accepted the tenderer may hot be willing to carry on. DISTRICT MEMORIAL. -7 . Mr Dunlop, speaking in reference to the proposed Soldiers’ Memorial at Paeroa said the secretary had written asking for names of possible canvassers for subscriptions/ Messrs Lochland, Dunlop, Young,, and Death had been appointed. / ■ ; RURAL DELIVERY. , With reference tp a letter frpm the Farmers’ Union, Auckland, Mr Dunlop said that the rural z delivery was hitting the farmers very; hard. It was practically another tax on the farmers, while in the towns people, had Hie mails delivered free. It was suggested that th© towns should pay for their own delivery to make the farmers’ burden less, Mr Death moved that a resolution should be sent to Mr Poland, Mr Rhodes, M.p., and tp the union executive that the branch thought the rural change excessive, and to suggest that the township should bear part of the cost. Mr Taylor seconded and the motion was carried. RIVERS COMMISSION COSTS. Regarding 'the portion of the cost of the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers Commission Mr Dunlop said the Farmers* Committee had sought the Services of Mr Porritt, who had, put forward a very good case,, and contended no Auckland solicitor could Have done it better. The c'6mmittee?s share was £46 9s. The amount of subscriptions received to date was £37. The deficiency was £9 9s. The present rateable area he contended, could not bear l-sOth part of the cost, and there was no doubt that the ’‘ateable area would be considerably increased. IMPORTANT DRAINAGE. Mr Dunlop said Ithat during the recent heavy' rains the waters were bank high and he thought rn> relief could be obtained until drainage was put through. Mr Death understood that the steam navvy was to be moved ’on to 'the digging of the drain. Tt was decided that the Department' proceed. with the drain so that, it would be ready by next winter.
