PAEROA RUGBY UNION.

EUCHRE AND DANCE. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Great pppulaiity characterised the euchre and dance held by the-Paeroa Rugby Union in the Central Theatre last night, there being patrons present from Waihi, Waikinp, Karangahake, Hikutaia, Netherton, Wharepoa, and other places. There were at least 150 couples in the hall. The music was first-rate, as supplied gratis by the Paeroa Orchestra, consisting of Messrs F. Clarke, piano:; H. Campbell, violin; W. Ardern, cornet; Geo. Fallon, trombone; P. Jennings, clarinet, the extras being played by Misses Nicholls, Ardern, and Taylor. Messrs R. B. Penlington (the secretary) and Mr J. Redfern officiated capably as M’s.C. The ladies of Paeroa provided a good supper, much better, than is expected for anything less than a ball. Thanks to the seceretary and committee, jthe arrangements were very effective, crowding not being permitted, and thus everyone enjoyed a .tasteful and plentiful supper under comfortable conditions. The dispensing of the supper was efficiently carried out. ' In regard" to the floor, this it.em is getting “special,” but not “honourable” mention in the local and general column. THE TROPHIES, The trophies were presented by Mrs Poland, wife of! Mr H. Poland, M.P., patron of the Union, in the absence of (the latt.er, owing to Parliament being in session. His Worship the Mayor (Mr P. E. Brenan) made the announcements on behalf' of Mr and Mrs Poland. The chairman of the committee, Mr W. J. Silcock, apologised for the absence of the president (Mr S. Walmsley), and also for the state of the floor, upon which t:he “boys” had worked since 11 a.m. with unsatisfactory results, owing tp the “ Glycerole ” preparation, recently put on for health reasons. He also thanked the musicians, the ladies for the supper, and also the donors of the caps. It .was the. fit'st year for ten years thait caps had been presented, and there were three lots, for which the union was very grateful. Reference was also made to the valuable services of Messrs. A. E. Fielder and W. J. Moore, who organised the Referees ’Association and assisted in the bringing put of! young referees. His Worship the Mayor then announced the prize winners, Mrs Poland handing over the trophies to the various recipients. In presenting the Paer'pa Rugby Union with the Frank Poland Memorial Cup, His Worship remarked on the good that had been done for football by the late Mr Frank Poland, who was. certainly one who had finely “ played the game.” (Applause.) He also appealed to all local footballers to subscribe towards the Paeroa District War Memorial.

The following .trophies were distributed, including prizes for the euchre, which was played under the direction of Miss Shaw. Goldfields Cup, Mr W. Bottomley (Senior Representative Cup under G.RJL). Sharebrokers’ Cup, L.. Rice (J. Tre.anor), (Junior Representative Cup under G.R.U.). Senior Cup, Hikutaia. Club, V. Young (G. Collins), (Senior Cup under P.R.U.). Junior Cqp ,East Club, J. Treanor (Junior Cup under P.R.U.). Medal fpr best forward, East Club, D. Ryan, presented by W, M. Sorensen.

Medal for best back, East Club, W., Bottomley, presented by Messrs J. Barrett and G. Otter. Medal for best forward, West; Club, A* Nelson, presented by Mrs Wyn. Ed,wards. Medal for best back, West Club, R. Wells, presented by Mrs’ G. A, Bush. Caps for the winning teams in the different grades were "not available for distribultion. The winning teams were: . Hikutaia Club (Senior grade), presented by Mr A. Robinson. -East Club (Junior grade), presented by Mr ‘D. MeWatl,ers. East Club (Third grade), presented by Messrs F. Wells and T. P. Vuglar. EUCHRE. First prize (iadies), presented by mrs C. Pascoe, Mrs Lipsham. Second prize (ladies), presented by Mr R. W. Medhurst, Mrs G. H. Taylor. First prize (gentlemen), presented by Mrs Corbett, Mr Keitel. Second prize (gentlemen), presented by Business Men’s Association, of Paeroa, Charles Treanor. A special prize for the scorer of the greatest number of points, halfton of coal, presented by Brenan and Co., Mr Ketel. '
