OBITUARY.

MR. S. BAX. There passed away at his home at Wharepoa on Saturday morning last one of 1 the most enterprising and respected settlers in the valley, in the person of Mr Sid. Bax. The deceased came t.p the Dominion when quite a youth, and through industry ..and perseverance worked his way up the ladder of life. As a young man he tried his hand at mining at Waitekauri, and, in fact, almost anything that came his way until he, was able to se’cure a section at Wharepoa, where he m.ade his home. He married a daughter of Mr Cryer, of Wharepoa, who survives him. For u number of years he was the representative of the Hikutaia .riding on the Thames County Council, and was responsible for a good deal of the progress - made in • that part of the county. In dairying matters Mr Bax was one of the largest suppliers, and when the Thames Valley Co-operative Dairying Co., Ltd, (now absorbed in the N.Z. Co-op Dairy Co., Ltd.) was formed in 1902, he was one of its original directors, and served on the board right, up to the last, with the exception of two shoj breaks. He was an enthusiastic settler on all matters pertaining to the advancement of the district, and took a special pride in his farms and dairy herds. A hard fighter; but he never retained any animosity when an argument was finished. “Sid” would always finish up with, “Well, old fellow, shake hands.” He was a keen sport, and was particularly fond of a good trotting horse, of which he was regarded as being a keen judge. He leaves a wife and family of six sons and two daughters t.o mourn his' loss. The funeral took place at Omaha cemetery pn Tuesday last, and was largely attended, friends coming from long distances to pay their last tribute of respect*tp a worthy citizen., Being a mfember of Sir Walter, Scot,t Lodge of Freemasons, the last sad rites of the Order were given at the grave/side.
