YESTERDAY’S SITTING. AN ASSAULT CASE. Frederick Ngawiki was charged before Mr j: H. Salmon, S.M., yesterday, with assault. Sergt. O’Grady said accused and another man were playing billiards, and during a dispute accused struck the other in the face. Accused said the other had called him a liar, the epithet being "preceded by an adjective. The magistrate said that that was not the first time he had been charged with assault. There was no evidence of .provocation. In that case he would be fined £5 and costsi, andfa warning was issued to him not to come up again. One month was allowed in which .to pay. SALE OF LIQUOR. A youth of seventeen years was charged with selling liquor. Sergeant O’Grady said it was common knowledge that liquor was being sold round the town. The beer was drunk by four men. • The Magistrate pointed out that persons found guilty in a case like that were liable t,o a fine up to £5O flor a first offence. In this i case accused would be lined £5 and. costs. One month was allowed in which to pay. MY LADY NICOTINE. Joseph Mar charged with smoking in a non-smoker carriage of the railway train. Sergt. O’Grady said the guard hat asked him to cease smoking, but he had continued to dp so in the nonsmoker. Accused pleaded that it was absentmindedness, and wished to distract his attention from the pain in a cut finger. He was fined 10s and costs. DEFENCE ACT CASES. James Collett was charged with, not attending drill as required. This case had been adjourned from a previous court. Sergt.-Major G. Patterson said defendant had declared he lived outside the radius, but it had been found that he had been .working outside the radius and had been living part of the time inside the radius. Defendant said he was; residing in Awaiti, where he was working and /living with his brother on a farm, 4% miles from Paeroa. Sometimes, about once a week, when he came in to Paeroa to a dance, he ■ stayed in the town. The Sergt-Major : Is it a fact that you often come in to town ? Defendant: I come -in for my mail. Sergt.-Major Patterson asked for a conviction, as defendant’s address was not. down at present as Awaiti. The magistrate warned defendant to give his proper address and dismissed the information. Frank Gordon, who did not. appear, was charged with not attending drill. Mr Montague appeared for defendant and entered a plea of guilty. Sergt.-Major Patterson said that accused was a very irregular attender. He had been granted leave from every second parade. Subsequent to this arrangement Gordon had missed nine parades on end. The magistrate said defendant had come to the Court to obtain exemption, and had been refused. After obtaining relief from an officer he had not attended drill. He would fine accused £3 and costs, in default 14’ days. Edgar Tregawith, of Hikutaia, was charged with not attending drill. Tregawith said he was working in the cheese factory. The Sergt/-Major said he did not know that he had been working at the factory, but would urge a small penalty. The magisitrate said he would take into consideration that defendant did not know how to apply for exemption, and entered a conviction with costs- , CIVIL CASES. Judgments were given by default in the following cases : Le Manquais, Lamb and Co., v. J. B. Morrison, £42 14s Id, and costs £3 12s 6d ; Le Manquais, Lamb and Co. v. Rara Menita. £3B 4s lid, and costs £3 ss. In the judgment summons, Sykes v. Beasley, it was arranged for £2 10s per month to be paid.
