HEALTH CONDITIONS IN BOROUGH.

DANGER OF BATS. A “CLEAN-UP” REQUESTED. Several matters off great importance in respect tp the hygienic conditions of the Borough of Paeroa were referred to in the report of the Borough Council Health Committee, presented to the council on Thursday evening, as follows: Communications have b,een received from the Health Department re the formation of a local Epidemic Committee. The Ohinemuri County Council have considered this matter l , anil there should be no difficulty in setting up a committee. It is suggested that at an early date a meeting should be called of representatives of the Borough, .the Ohinemuri County Council, and the Thames Hospital Board, for the purpose pf setting up of this committee, and fixing the boundaries of its operations, and She apportioning of expenses that may be incurred, and the details pf organisation and operation, should an epidemic occur. The Health Department also wrote at some length re the. destruction of rats, *the cleaning up of garbage, etc., which would be the. natural haunts of rats. It is suggested that some publicity be given to the question of' the menace of rats to public health, and of the certainty of their acting as carriers of bubonic p'lagtie, which is mostly spread by the bit,es of the ratfleas. It is also suggested by the Department that a cleaning-up week would be of some benefit to the town. In connection with the sanitation of our t.own, we recommend .that the Inspector be instructed to inspect all the back yards in the Borouqh > in the event of his finding insanitary conditions prevailing for him to give instructions to the hpusehdlder to have their premises cleaned forthwith in accordance with the Health Department’s instructions, and that he report to the Town Clerk the names of those householders whose premises are insanitary by Octob.er 22nd next.
