DISTRICT NEWS.
("Gazette” Staff Reporter.) lUBUA. THE BUSY WHARF. The frail wooden structure which represents the wharf at Turua swayed and trembled last Wednesday when the s.s. Apouri was loading and unloading large quantities of outward and inward cargo,.. Long before the vess.eT- arrived the wharf was so laden with crates of cheese and other produce that there was scarcely room for the inward cargo to be unloaded. When the unloading operations did commence, there was scarcely room to move. Then the ferry launch arrived in the middle of the operations. The passengers were forced to scramble their way as best they could over cargo and squeeze past the trucks. As it is often the case that two steamers, as well as a couple of lhunch.es, find it necessary to berth at the wharf at the same time, it is apparent that a substantial structure is required. The Harbour Board is alive’to the fact that a new wharf at Turua is an urgent matter, and has decided to push forward the work by immediately calling for tenders for a wooden structure. The concrete wharf enthusiasts may not be pleased at the building of the jetty in wood, but if this decision had not been Reached, it may be some time before Turua would get its new wharf. The decision for wood was made so as to expedite its construction.
Last Monday the Turua factory shipped from the wharf 60 crates of cheese and 36 boxes of butter, .while on Wednesday 110 crates of cheese were taken away. The Huirau Road factory sent away 90 crates of cheese on Wednesday. Other cargo sent by Wednesday’s boats included 61 bullock hides and 10 bundles of sheep skins. THE FACTORY. The Turua factory has recently had installed a whey butter plant.
