PAEROA BOWLING CLUB.
OPENING OF THE GREEN.
MARRED BY RAIN.
NO GAMES PLAYED,
The official opening ofl the Paerpa Bowling Club’s green took place on Saturday, but owing to the rain it was not possible to play. There was, however, no great disappointment, as the officials had wisely wired to other clubs telling them not to come because of the weather conditions. Local members, a good number of whom came along, knew what to expect, but al'l the same they looked with longing eyes on the green, which was never in a better state for play, except for the wet.
Addressing the members, the president, Mr G. H. Taylor, expressed his regret that the weather was so unfavourable, though t,he position was noc so bad as it would have been had the Club allowed members ofl other clubs to come to Paeroa to meet disappointment. There wpuTd be a semi-official opening, and probably an “at home” later on, in November or December, when neighbouring clubs could he invited. He hoped there would be an absence of bickering this season, with plenty of hard-fought battles characterised by friendly feeling, and that although the opening was somewhat depressing, the season and its conclusion would be highly successful. Meetings of the committee had been held fortnightly, and a set of rules - for which thanks were due io Mr G. P. de Castro for collating and typing out a draft copy—would be submitted to a general meeting. On being called upon to throw the first jack, Mrs Taylor, wife of the president, performed that .time-hon-oured office in good style, and the green was officially declared 'open for 1921-22 season. PRESENTATION. Calling the members into the pavilion',. the president said he had a very pleasant duty to perform ; namely, to make a presentation, on behalf of the Club, t.o one of the past)-presi-dents, Mr C. Clews, who was leaving the district. In presenting Mr;s Clews with a pair of silver flower vases; and Mr Clews with a fine set of silver .tea-spoons, Mr Taylor said the recipients could be assured that they would carry with them the very kind regards of the members of the Club. Acknowledging the gifts, Mr Clews said he had been taken completely by surprise. He thanked the donors sincerely for their kindness. It was with feelings of regret that he was 'leaving., the district. Before coming to Paeroa he had never played bowls, having found his recreation in fire-brigade pursuits, but as there was not. a vacancy on the local brigade when he arrived he tried bowls as a pastime, and he could honestly say that he had never had better sport in his life. He would always remember his happy association with the Paeroa Bowling Club, and he and Mrs Clews would treasure the tokens of goodwill just presented. Three clieers for Mr and Mrs Clews were heartily given. The quality of the refreshments dispensed by ladies went a long way towards compensating members for the unkindness of the weather. At a subsequent committee meeting Messrs T, H. Hale... W. A. Hamilton, A. J. Garry, and T. E. McMillan were elected to the membership of the Club.
