HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY
WORK OF THE MONTH.
ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The Hauraki Plains County Engineer, Mr R. J. Dillon, reported to his Council at the monthly meeting at Ngatea on. Monday: Stoppage of Work.—As instructed I have stopped all work on youi' roads, which are payable from the General Fund. The men at the Hikutaia quarry who were excavating for ■the new hopper were kept on until a receptacle for about 50 yards was made. The quarry is now workable when required.—Approved by Council.
Metal at Wharepoa.—A scow load of 88 cubic yards of shingle was discharged at Wharepoa early in the month. The shingle is fairly fine, but much better than what we have been receiving at Turua. Some of it was placed in the bad holes near by before the men were sent away ; the remainder is stacked on the river bank. Wilson’s Road.—The surfacemen from Turua and Netherton have been put on Wilson’s Road, also three men and a horse and dray from the quarry. They are deepening one of the old drains, and carting the spoil from the new drain to the low places in the road where filling is required. The tractor was taken to Paeroa for repairs, and a new driver procured. One of the quarrymen will operate the grader. The plans for the formation of the road (in duplicate) are with the Public Works Department. Tahuna Quarry.—None of the 'men who were in your emploj r appeared anxious to go out to Tahuna to work, so I am advertising for a man to take charge of the quarry there. As soon as a suitable man is obtained, operations will be commenced. Formation Works at Tahuna. —Two of the- Tahuna formation jobs, namely, Tahuna-Patetonga Road (61 chains), and the Landing Road (53 chains) have been advertised, tenders closing'on the 24th inst. The tenders will be laid before you for consideration. Plans and specifications fbr the other works there are being prepared, and I hope to have them in order for your next meeting. Inventory of Plant.-—An inventory of all plant, tools, and material in the various ridings is being prepared, and ,as far as possible they will be st,amped and placed under lock and key until such time as the Council may resume operations.
