TURUA'S ROADS.

NO DEPTH OF METAL.

EFFECT ON PROPOSED LOAN.

The Turua Reading Committee, accompanied by the County Chairman, one councillor, and the engineer, yesterday made a tour of inspection'of the roads in the proposed special rating area in order to ascertain the depth of metal on the roads, and to be in possession of full particulars regarding the quantity of metal which would be required to enable the work of the permanent reading scheme to be executed. The party consisted of Messrs. J. C. Miller (chairman), G. G. Hayward, and R. J? Dillon' (engineer) of the Hauraki Plains County Council/ and Messrs W. Madgwick, D,< G. McMillan* P. Henry, G. Grey, and J. Bennett of the peijmanent roads committee.

The party was surprised to find that there was no depth of metal on the roads—in fact, in places the metal was only 1% inches deep, even on the main road. The average depth would be perhaps 2 inches, and certainly not more than 2% inches. That this state of the~roads was unexpected was .evidenced by the remarks of the party.

Tn conversation with a “Gazette” representative, Mr J. C. Miller said that the discovery had been disappointing. The quantity of metal required would need to bp considerably increased. It had been estimated that 15,000 yards of metal would have been sufficient, but about 7000 yards more*metal would probably now be required, making a total of 22,000 yards of metal for the comple’tion of the work. Estimating the cost of metal at £1 per yard, an extra £7OOO wpuld be required in addition to the £25,000, which amount was proposed at the County Council meeting on Monday. That means a £32,000 loan WJU J>e necessary instead of £25,000.
