THAMES BAND CONTEST.
OPENING NIGHT’S PERFORMANCE. NEW PLYMOUTH X WINS HYMN. The Thames band contest opened in the Strand Theatre, Thames, on Wednesday evening, with euphonium solos and the test hymn, “Eternal Father.” Eight bandsmen competed in the solos, and eight bands rendered the hymn in good style. EUPHONIUM SOLO. The euphonium solo resutled: 1. J. Lowe (New Plymouth), 98 points (Fantasia on Welsh melody, “Jenny Jones”). 2. F. Beasley (Auckland Infantry), 93 points ("Sehnsuch”). 3. F. At Clarke (Whakatane), 93 points (“Sehnsuch”). THE TEST HYMN. The hymn, “Eternal Father,” was. very closely contested, the result finding seven of .the leading bands within four points of each other. As the styles of rendering the hymn were various, the monotony of hearing the same piece on eight consecutive occasions was much'felieved and evidence of the fact that the large audience appreciated the music was the prolonged applause which greeted each effort. The result was : 1. New Plymouth Citizens’ Band, 90 2. Dannevirke Municipal Band, 89 points. 3. Auckland Waterside Workers’ Band and Hamilton Municipal Band, 88 points. B Flat Cornet Championship Solo : Ist, R. Taylor (New Plymouth), 98*4 points ; 2nd. C. H. Hoyles (Auckland Infantry), 98 points: 3rd, A. Williams (Te Aroha), 97 points;. Quartette Auckland City, 96% points ; Whakatane and 3rd Auckland Infantry. 94% points. Trombone Trio: 1. Dannevirke, 94%, points; 2nd, New Plymouth and Waihi, 94 points. Trombone Solo: A. Handley (New Plymouth). 89 points; H. Buchan (Hamilton), 85 points : G. Robinson (Thames), 83 points.
