CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. Several subjects of town and district importance were discussed by the members of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce at the monthly meeting last night, the president, Mr E. W. Porritt, being in the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs P. E. Brenan and A. G. Cottrell. NGARARAHI CUT LAND. Mr L. May, assistant engineer for Public Works, Paeroa,, replying to a query from the Chamber, said the matter of providing access to the Ngararahi cut land was under consideration., The position was somewhat complicated, inasmuch as the sections referred to had never had access. The road reserves alone existed. The land referred to is the island between the Waihou River and the cut. —Received. PROPOSED MAIL SERVICE. Mr D. Leach suggested that the Nether-ton branch of the N-.Z. Farmers’ Union might wire to the PostmasterGeneral supporting the Paeroa-Ngatea mail service proposal. Mr Dunlop agreed to consult his executive immediattely. VACANT MINING SECTIONS*. The president brought up the matter of the vacant sections in the old mining areas being covered in blackberries, which, by flood a,nd birds, were seed beds for the low-lying lands. The conditions of tenure were now such that it was not profitable to occupy them, a condition being that the blackberries had to be eradicated. If the cps-t of tenure were reduced, people would take up the sections and cultivate them. The Crown Lands Board should be approachel with a view to having the lands thrown open for occupation, minus the mining restrictions.-—Agreed to, and the Ohinemuri County Council and Waihi Borough Council .to be asked to co-operate.
