DISTRICT NEWS.

(“Gazette” Staff Reporter,).. NGATEA. THE BREAD SUPPLY. Regarding some statements made at a meeting at Ngatea recently concerning the state of the bread when it reached Ngatea, Mr Buckley, of Messrs Buckley and Williams, of Turua, who supply the bread to.Ngater, was interviewed by a “Gazette” representative recently. The statement, which was quoted in the “Gazette,” was to the effect that the bread was like weather boards when it reached Ngatea. Mr Buckley contends that these statements were totally uncalled for and quite untrue. The bread, which is supplied to Ngatea four days a week, is baked at 7 a.m., and invariably reaches Ngatea by 9 a.m. —two hours after it comes out of the oven. It is impossible, Mr Buckley contends, for the bread to become like “weather boards” in that short period, and that .the statement was unwarranted. TURUA. The present .week being holiday week at school, it is the intention of the energetic school committee to further improve the school grounds and to renovate the flag-pole. The Turua school committeemen have already- done a large amount of work to -the grounds, the improvements proving very beneficial. A SLIGHT MISHAP. Mr Williams, of the firm of Messrs Buckley and William, bakers, of Turua, while loading his cart for the usual Monday’s round met with a slight mishap which may easily have been more serious. He was loading his cart, when part of the harness broke, precipitating the heavy vehicle against him. The sudden impact, however, knocked him from under the cart and he escaped with only slight bruises. Had he fallen under the cart, Mr Williams would most certainly have been an urgent case for the nearest hospital. A NEW DWELLING. A dwelling which is being erected by Mr Aberhart for Mr Williams, of Turua, is almost complete, and Mr Williams is expecting to move into his new quarters at the end of the week. PERSONAL. t Mrs Honis returned on Monday from a visit to Hamilton. Mr C. R. Munro, school inspector, arrived in Turua ftrom Auckland on Sunday night. He will inspect a couple of schools on the Plains this week. ' KEREPEEHI. FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. A meeting of the Kerepeehi Farmers ’ Union was held last Monday evening, Mr Chatfield presiding. It was decided to ask a herd-test-ing expert to address the settlers. It was announced that a veterinary surgeon, will address the settiers at Mr J. M. Thompson’s residence during the week end, with the idea of forming a veterinary club or association.

WAITAKARURU. AUCKLAND BOAT SERVICE. Hitherto there has been no regular boat service from Auckland to Waitakaruru, but there is a movement afoot to supply this deficiency. Yesterday Mr Elliott received a telegram from Mr Isaac Haley, who is at present in Auckland stating that, the Clevedon Shipping Company’s boat “Minerva,” was leaving Auckland for Waitakaruru on a trial journey to ascertain what trade was 'offering. Mr Haley’s wire further asked Mr Elliott to enquire into the possibilities of trade and requested him to call a meeting of settlers. It is understood that Mr Elliott intends to call a meeting within a day or two.
