PLAINS MATERNITY HOME

AND HOSPITAL BOARD. THE PROPOSAL DISCUSSED. In pursuance of the movement for the establishment of a maternity home at Ngatea, the following letter was received from Mr E. Waltbn, for the settlers, by the Thames Hospital Board:

“I was instructed to write tq ypur Board and ask for the following information, required in order the better to canvass for subscriptions on the Plains for a maternity home: (a) Will your Board erect a maternity home .at Ngatea, and if so, upon what conditions ?

(b) Assuming that your Board will do so, how much money will be required to be raised by the settlers ?

(c) If the answer to question “a” is in the affirmative, will your, Board take the necessary steps tp obtain the Health Department’s approval of a site at Ngatea ? “I understand that ,an area of five acres is required. Several offers of sites have been received, but it is awkward in canvassing not tp be able to state that any particular one has been approved of, and it is with view to removing this difficulty that question “c” has been asked. There is no need for me to stress. apy further the necessity for a maternity home on the Plains, and I understand the only difficulty in the way of your Board erecting one is (that of finance. It is upon this understanding that the settlers are proceeding, and they desire me to state that it is for the purpose of assisting your Board in the way of finance 'that they are moving in the matter.*

Consideration of the matter was deferred until* next meeting; in the meantime, the chairman to see the Plains representatives and put certain information before them.
