THE JERSEY COW.

ADDRESS BY MR W. J. HALL. - y'i After the business meeting of the Jersey Breeders’ Club last evening Mr W. J. Hall, president of the branch., gave a short discourse on the Jersey cattle. EARLY MATURITY. Lulu Alfa of Ashburn, he said, was the champion yearling of the wprld. Her test started when she was one year and ten months old, and she produced for the year 30,6681 b of milk and 8001 b butter-fat.. No, other yearling of any breed comes within 1001 b of this record. This heifer was sold when nine months old for £3O, showing plainly that .the owner at the time was not aware of the "value of this heifer which has proved a gold mine to the purchaser. One of .the previous records of the junior 2-year old class was held by a New Zealand bred heifer “ Mere,” who produced 12,164 lbs milk and 6631 b butter-fa*. - She held x the position for two years, but. since then has been beaten by Lulu Alfa of Ashburn, which* beast still holds the worlds record. The present two-year record holder is Astor’s August Child, with a yield of 11,4981 b milk and 6891 b. butter-fat. MATURE COW CLASS. In the mature, cow classes Vive ia France has put up a new world’s champion milk production with 14,9251 b milk and 10311 b butter-fat. A New Zealand champion was Sultan’s Daisy, with a production of 13,5021 b milk and 9681 b butter-fat. Woodstock’s Fancy Free and Woodstock’s Baby were the gold medal winners of last year’s tests. To illustrate the productiveness of the Jersey Mr Hall gave as an instance the cow Financial King’s Interest, which at the age of 21 years and six months gave birth to its 20th calf. In her 19th year she produced 14,7391 b milk and 8021 b butter-fat. This goes to prove, said Mr Hall, that the Jersey cow is one of the youngest to calve and lasts for a long period. CONSISTENCY. To show the consistency of the Jersey cattle he referred to “Sybil See.” She is the only cow in New Zealand, he said, with five .records. Her last test at nine years of age was 15,0321 b milk and 6451 b butterfat, with an average o*f fat- of 5231 b, or 26151 b in five years. There were many others with three and four years’ records. The New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association cows with semi-official tests numbered 1038. The average, which included two-year heifers, was 4141 b butter-fat. THE MISSION. The real mission of the Jersey covz is tp produce. First' of all she must be a dairy cow, and must be possessed of high constitution and high capability. She must have a temperament that will lend itself continuously for many years for the conversion of raw materials into butter-fat. She must .have a tremendous flow of blood, and also have the ability to produce largely and consistently at regular intervals. THE END. It has often been held up against the Jersey that after her productive life has ceased she. is not fit for the butcher. This is so, said Mr Hall, but the answer to 'this is that, when she has ceased to fill the bucket yo.i can afford to give her a decent burial.
