OBITUARY.

, _ ,Q MIL J. W. SHAW. There died at his late home :.u Matata yesterday Mr J. W. Shaw, proprietor of the Matata Hotel. The deceased was born in Dublin bn Christmas Day, 1855, and,came to Auckland by the oarque “Ismay” at the age of 14 years. For a few years .after arriving in New Zealand Mr Shaw resided at Thames, and then came on to Ohinemuri, ’ and for many years w.as engaged in mining and held a mine-manager’s certificate. In 1895 he became proprietor of the Commercial Hotel in Paeroa, which he successfully conducted for many years. He took an active part in the doings of the place, and was president for years of the Paeroa Football Club and a member of the Ohinemuri Jockey Chib from its establishment. He wasalso a member of the Ohinemuri County Council for some years. After leaving Paeroa he was mine host at the British Hotel, Auckland, and later at the Grand Hotel, Te Arpha. After leaving Te Aroha he resided on his farm at Waihi Beach, and from there went to Matata. In 1876 he married a daughter of the l,ate Mr J. Ritchie, who was well known in the early days in connection with educational establishments at Thames. Mrs Shaw and four sons survive to mourn the loss of a fond husband and father.

The funeral takes place at Paeroa to-morrow., s
