FOOTBALL.

INTER-UNION MAICH. PAEROA 12, PI'AKO 6. The Goldfields inter-union matches were continued on Saturday, Piako and Paeroa playing their first game at Paeroa. Owing to the excessive rain during the week the ground was in a dreadful state, mud and slush from end to end, with pools pf water in places. The game was hard, and at times exciting, and .there was not a man who did not play well, considering the conditions. It was a day for individual players, and Moore was the best back on the ground. Winder was a bit off at the start, but infproved as the game progressed. J. Poland. Chamberlain, Shaw, and Fisher were the grafters in the local forwards. THE GAME. Piano got possession from the throwin and punted. Paeroa bt.cns fumbled the pall, and by following up well the visitors started a loose rusn which ended in a score. The kick was not successful. After a short period-of loose play Piako started another forward rush from a line-out, and sent over the line, Paeroa forcing. From 'the kick-out Fisher took up to iialif-way, J. Poland taking charge from there to Piako’s twentyfive, being relieved by Beuney, who carried on to the line, where the deluding side was penalised. Winder .took the shot and by a good kiun made the scores even. Piakp 3, Paeroa 3. A scrum followed immediately after, the commencement of the second round from which the home forwards' started a loose rush and carried play down to the corner flag, from the throw-in the ball w.ent over and Piako forced,. I. Poland returned the kickout, and following up sent over, but Piako got .there first and forced. A lengthy spell of .loose play in neutral territory which followed ended with Piako marking on their twenty-five line. Moore returned and found the line near the corner. The defending forwards broke away from the lineout, I. Poland stopping the rush. Line play was indulged in for a time, J. Poland and Chamberlain then taking down from half-way to Piako’s twen-ty-five flag.. From the .throw-in t, e ball went across-field and over the line, Piako forcing in the corner.. The kick-out was returned, and a bad kick by Piako went to Moore, who carried down to the line, bat lost the ball, which rolled out in touch. Loose play followed for the remainder of the quarter. The second half opened with a forward rush by Paeroa to their opponents’ quarter flag. Piako immediately returned to the other twenty-five frpm the line-put. Then followed some ’tight play in Paeroa’s territory, the defenders being very fortunate once or twice in cltearing, Eventually Winder got possession and with a gpjod line kick sent out at half-way. From the throw-in the ball went to Piako, who kicked to Morrison. The latter punted high and Moore followed up and carried on with the ball at his toe over the ’ twenty-five i'ine. 1 Poland, with support, than took up the running to the- line, Poland scoring. The kick failed: Paeroa 6, Piako 3. The home team returned to the attack from, the kick-out, and close play followed on Piako’s line. From a scrum near the goalf-line the local pacs pushed over and Shaw scored. Winder again missed with the kick. Paeroa 9, Piako 3. An exchange of kicks then took place, after which, loose play in midfield was -the order. Just on change-over time A. Moon kicked down the Morrison hung over the ball, waiting for-it ,to roll across the line, when Moon came up and caught him napping and scored. The kick was not converted. Paeroa 9, Pjakp 6. The last quarter opened with a lengthy period of loose play in midfield, interspersed with a number of kicking bouts. Paeroa eventually carried play over the visitors’ twentyfive line. From a loose scrummage Bqttomley sent out to Moore, to Winder, the latter dashing ever. The kick missed.- 'Another period of loose forward play terminated with Piako kicking over and Paeroa forcing. Good hard play then followed until the ca.Hl of time, the ball travelling up and down the field, but neither side gained any advantage, the game ending Paeroa 12, Piako 6. Mr W. Bryden was referee. JUNIORS. PAEROA DEFEAT PIAKO. ■ The Paeroa junior -representatives played’ Piako junior representatives at Te Aroha on Saturday, the game resulting in a. win for Paeroa by 11 points to 3. For the winners Rice kicked a penalty goal, Whelan scored a try which Fisher converted, and Benney scored a try. Mr T. Atkins was referee. THIRD GRADE. ANOTHER WIN FOR EAST. East and West third-grade teams played on the No. 2 ground as a cur-tain-raiser to the senior match on Saturday, and after a closely contested game East won by 6 points to 3. Mr R. P. Penlington was referee. •

PLAINS REPRESENTATIVE MATCH

HAURAKI PLAINS V. I’aEROA.

On Satuf'day the Paeroa senior representative team will travel to Ngatea to play a selected fifteen from the footballers of the newly-formed Hauraki Plains Rugby Union. This will be the first big foo.tball match held on the Plains, and should, go a long way to place 1 the game on a sound footing in that district. There is some good material in the Plains union, and a keen exhibition can De looked forward to by those who intend to be present at the match. Ou

July 23 the Waitakaruru Club, 'team played a Thames “B” team as a cur-tain-raiser to the Thames-Hamilton match for the Peace Cup, and had a victory. The result of that game indicates that the Hauraki Plains Union will put a team on the field o:. Saturday capable of making the Paeroa representatives do their best.
