The cultivation of the sunflower as a crop is very extensive in the south of Russia. The plant furnishes oil in its seed, fodder for cattle m its leaves, and a large quantity of potash is manufactured from it. Vessels will not be allowed to go through the locks on the new Panama Canal under their own steam,but will be taken in tow by electric lodfcurnotives running on the edge of the lock walls.
