Magistrate’s Court.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1916 (Before E. Rawson, Esq.. S.M. Four school boys belonging to Huntly, whose ages ranged from 12 to 13 years, were charged with having committed two separate acts of breaking and entering the shop of Mr Geo. Edwards restaurant keeper, on Saturday, 23rd, and Sunday, 30th January last, and stealing'cigarettes.soft drinks, etc., to the total value of £2 11s 2d. The Magistrate convicted and admonished the boys, and ordered the parents to pay for the goods stolen, and impressed on the parents the necessity of keeping them under control in future, otherwise the State would have to do so, A Maori named Taua Awa Tukero was charged that on the llt-h December, 1915, he did aid and abet some person or persons unknown in the commission of an offence, to wit, in supplying him with intoxicating liquor (two bottles of beer), for consumption off licensed premises. Constable Ingram stated that a good deal of this sort of thing Was carried on in Huntly amongst the natives. The Magistrate convicted and fined accused £5, and 12s Court costs ; also pointed out that the penalty for supply ring] natives with liquor for consumption off licensed premises was £SO. It is a pity that persons supplying natives are not more frequently caught committing the offence. A miner working in tire Taupiri Coal Co., Ltd., Extended Mine, was charged with having a contrivance for smoking, to wit, a cigarette in his possession while in the workings of the mine on the 7th inst. Accused pleaded guilty, and was fined 20s and Court costs 7s.

John Peni King, a Maori, was -charged before Messrs E. J. Farrell and Jas. Bishop, Justices, on the 12th inst. that on the 11th inst., he stole a. glass pint measure from the Huntly Hotel valued Is the property of Mr L. B. Harris,licensee. Accused pleaded guilty and was fined 10s, or in default seven days imprisonment. It was stated by the police that this native had the glass pint measure in his pocket after 10 p.m. as well as two quart bottles of beer of which he will have to account for having in his possession next Magistate's Court sitting at Huntly. In the case of Defence Department v. Tonga Mahuta for failing to attend drill at Huntly drill shed on the 20th and 27th of January last. Sergt. Major Ausell asked that-the information be withdrawn pending the matter being investigated by the Minister of Defence. The information was accordingly withdrawn. A similar case against a native named Taka Herewith was also withdrawn, Sergt. Major Ansell stating that Herewini was suffering from consumption and was practically medically unfit,
