The Holidays.
THE holidays being over, most people are back again at work, although there are still some stragglers who have not yet returned.
According to how the holidays have been spent, people have come back either invigorated and refreshed or jaded and glad of the chance to recover from the strenuous chase they have made after enjoyment. We are afraid that the latter class predominates, for it would appear from the manner and remarks of a great number of those who are back at work, that excitement and enjoyment has been their one object of attainment for the ten days of holiday making, and that, although they have had what they call “ A good time, ” they are glad of the comparative rest provided by their return to work. Whether such a way of spending a holiday is a rational one or not, is not for us to say, and probably it would be of no use to say anyhow for no matter what the after effects, people will to the end of time, go on fighting hard to enjoy themselves, and being worsted in the conflict each time.
Christmas in Huntly this year, was spent much as in other years.
The usual crowd departed to visit friends and to spend their money at races etc. More than the usual number departed in launches for the various picnicking grounds, and from all accounts had more than the usual amount of excitement, while an innovation was the running of several River Excursions.
It might have been expected that the war would have had a sobering and chastening effect on people this year, and that less than the usual amount of pleasure would be indulged in but no appreciable difference could be seen, and it is evident that one of the most valuable lessons of the War, has not yet been learnt in New Zealand at least.
