Sick and Wounded Fund

Since the inception of the Queen Carnival, the follow ng amounts have been received at the Town Board Office : —ln Huntiy— From the sale of art

Of the above sum of £628 15s lOd has been forwarded to Hamilton, and has helped to place the Queen of the South in her proud position, while the sums of 8s expressly stipulated not to purchase. votes and 4s 6d for Red Cross Fund are still in hand. The above does not show the whole of the amounts gathered in Huntly and District for the Carnival Fuud, as a sale held at Ohinewai of cattle given by the farmers of Te Hoe, Matahuru, and Waiterimu realised about £IOO, and this was forwarded direct to Hamilton, there not being time to put it through the local fund. There was also an amount of £SO raised at Kimihia for the Soldiers Queen, so that the grand total would amount to close on to £BOO.

While the people of Huntly were, no doubt pleased to see the Queen of the South head the poll, we have no doubt they feel the same as do the ! people of Hamilton, who have said they would have been just as pleased to see her at the bottom of the poll, provided the amount of money subscribed for her had been the same, and the others proportionately higher.

When the Auckland committee set out to organise the Carnival, it was thought that their aim was rather high, and that great efforts must be put forward if the sum aimed at was to be realised. The difficuty of the undertaking acted as a stimulus, and all over the Province, herculean effort were put forth, with the result that the aim was exceeded by nearly £1,000,00.
