A boy at Ohinewai made whiplashes and sold them at the cattle sale, realising £1- 3 0. The proceeds were devoted to the Sick and Wounded Fund. Queen Competitions seem to be very prolific in providing money for the War Funds. We are informed that the competition promoted by the farmers at Matahuru, realized over £7O. Privates J. Hogg, W. Kerr, P. Hill, G. Green-veil, P. Higgins, W, Climo, J. Wallace, D. Harvey, and N. S. Parker, members of the Expeditionary Force, who are on leave, are at present visitors to the Mining Town. Lieut. A. R. Herrington who joined the Auckland Mounted Rifles and was wounded at the Dardanelles recently was for some time pupil teacher at the Huntly Public School, He held the position of assistant teacher at the Napier Street School, when he enlisted with the Fourth .Reinforcements. For a very long time now, bluntly has felt the need of a saddler for repair work, and it is with pleasure we announce this want is to be filled in the near future. Mr F. Gatchpole has purchased the property recently occupied by Mr H. R. Porter, and as soon as certain alterations are made, intends to commence business as a saddler and harness maker. Mr Catchpole expects to be ready to commence work about the beginning of next month. At the recent examination held in Hamilton, in connection with Trinity College of Music, London, the following pupils presented by Mrs R. Nicholls, were successful : Junior Division, I ris Parker, Clarice Good, G ladys Rogers (Ngaruawahia), Francis Gibb and .Madge Gibb (Taupiri). Preparatory Division: Samuel Baird, and Rose Smith (Huntly), Olive Johnson (Taupiri), Eileen Gerrand (Rnngiriri), Una Hall, Olivo Parker (Ngaruawahia). We highly congratulate Mrs Nicholls on the success achieved. At the Police Court on Wednesday last, before Mr E. J Farrell, J.P., John Green was charged with being an idle and disorderly person within the meaning of the Police Offences Act 11, was shown that on each ol his visits to Huntly the accused had proved himself to be a nuisance to the community, that people had been often taken in by him, and that he had practically lived by false pretences. I On a former occasion he had 1 neen convicted, and had been t placed in an Old Men’s Home, 1 but had refused to stay there, f The Justice concluded to sen- | tence the man to three months imprisonment without hard 'hi- I hour, thus removing a nuisance from tho Town, and at, the sametime providing him with a good i home for tho time being.
i At the usual fortnightly auction sale to be held to-morrow ; (Saturday), Mr J. Elliot, in addition to a quantity of furniture, seed and ordinary potatoes, will offer 27 suits of well made, well cut clothes, suitable for youths and men. As traveller’s samples their quaiHy is undeniable. A lecture on the progress of the war will be delivered in the Miners’ Hall on September Bth, by the Rev. W. E. Monckton, M.A. Mr Monckton is an able exponent of the strategy of the war and a very entertaining speaker, so none should lose the opportunity of hearing his lecture. Tnere will not be any charge for admission. Another Social run by the St. Paul’s Ladies’ Guild was held in the Miners’ Union Hall, on Monday last. Perhaps owing to the number of socials held lately, and, the ball which was to be held this week, the attendance was not up to the usual standard, but nevertheless the affair was very successful, and those who did attend evidently had a veryenjoyable time. The arrangements including the light supper were quite up-t i-date, and the music provided by- the Huntly Orchestra was all that could be desired.
