THE HUNTLY PRESS PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT 1 P.M. FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 1915. Local and General
A special Gospel missionary meeting will be held this evening in the Gospel Hall. See advt. Mr J. Robson of this town, took first prize for N.Z. bred and open classes, also Challenge Cup for Irish Setter bitch, at the Wellington Show held on Wednesday and Thurday last. The many friends of Mr Geo. Greenwell, son of Mr R. Greenwell, Manager of the Huntly Brick and Fireclay Company, Ltd., who has been an inmate in the hospital at the Trentham Camp will be glad to learn that he is now convalescent, and is expected home this week end. The Ohinewai School, the attendance at which has been steadly creeping up for a considerable time, lias now reached the point when the school is entitled to an assistant, and the Board having made an appointment, the new teacher (Miss Moore), took up her duties this week. It is with much regret that we chronicle the deatli of two grandchildren of Mr and Mrs D. Molesworth, sen., of Huntly. First, the little daughter of Mr and Mrs Stanley Davis died at Hamilton Hospital on Friday last, then the little daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Collins, died cn Monday last. Both were residents of Ngaruawahia, and both succumbed to a severe attack: of diphtheria. The remains were interred at Ngaruawahia on Wednesday afternoon. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Huntly,on Faiday last, a Maori boy was fined 11s and costs for the theft of a bicycle at Taupiri Another first offender was convicted and fined £2, and 7s costs for riding a horse wi a a sore back. The Magistrate, Mr S. Rawson, commented very strongly on the matter of dumb animals being worked with sore backs and shoulders, and remarked that had defendant been a man he would have imposed the full penalty of the law. The Awara Railway has now been far enough advanced to warrant the Pukemiro Mine in starting, and u few men were put oil the cord last week, a truck or two of coni being sent away. It will be some considerable time before the mine is in full swing, as it has been found impossible to open up the mine properly without facilities for getting the coal away.
We have been privileged to , peruse two most interesting letters written by Mr Bert Wesley, who went with the Fifth Reinforcements to the Dardanelles. Unfortunately we received them too late for this week’s issue, but they will be published next week, when, we have no dount, our readers will be as much interested in the descriptions of the voyage as we were. At the recent examinations in connection with Trinity College of Music, London, all the pupils presented by the Sisters of the local convent were successful: Intermediate, Grace Berry; Junior Division, Heatherbell Martin, Kathleen Porter, May Johnson. Preparatory Division, Joseph Battersbv, and Lenor Steel. First Steps, Veronica Webb and Thomas Sheridan. We highly congratulate the Sisters on the success achieved. The sale of business sites, advertised for last Friday, was not as successful as was anticipated, the opinions of the vendors and the prospective buyers as to values being somewhat at variance. Several lots were bid well up to the reserve, but in only one case did the bidding actually reach the reserve, Mr Thos. Moil' purchasing a residential site near his own property. It is a pity that the views of buyer and seller could not have been made to coincide, as the result of the sale of business sites would, no doubt, be the erection of some more pretentious business places than we now possess. Last year a further portion of the Huntly Awaroa Railway was authorised, but so far nothing has been done to make a start with the work. Recognising the urgent need of this work being pushed on, the settlers at Basley’s Corner, have joined hands with Ihe Huntly Town Board in trying to induce the Government to make a start with this much needed railway, and are moving in that direction through the member for the district Mr R. F. Bollard The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited, notify in another column that they will hold a clearing sale at Taupiri, by order of the Executors of the late F. W. Littlewood, on kjonday, 23rd iust., of his contracting and stable plant, consisting of .27 horses, waggons, drays, and harness ; also cows calves, and Pigs. A great deal of interest has been taken in the work going on at the Bowling Green. At almost any hour of the day, you might see one or more p'ersons standing on the Bridge, deeply interested in the work which was going on below them. One can hardly see what was the attraction, unless it was that among the workers were some who are supposed to be strangers as a rule to manual toil. However, the job has been well watched and well criticised, and it is to be hoped that, for the sake of those who are responsible for the work, it turns out alright. The ground was finally levelled and sown down last Monday and there were one or two very pleased looking faces in Huntly on Thursday, when a fine, soft warm rain began to fall. It is hoped by the officials of the i hub, that the grass will come along fast enough to be ready for play in November. The Club h;>*» now let a contract for the formation of the Croquet Lawn, which it is hoped will be finished in time for play before the ,end of the year.
