Accomodation for the Wounded.
In a few weeks, many more or less seriously wounded men will be landing on our shores, and so far as one can judge, no proper provision for their reception and and treatment has yet been made.
Many private offers of accomodation have been received, but no attempt has yet been made to cope with the fitting up of houses offered, or providing.the necessary attendance. Apparently the Hospital Boards are not in a position to do anything, as their finances are based on the expenditure of last year, and of course leave no margin for treating some hundreds of men from outside the country.
It is true that there is an amount of money collected privately, available for this purpose but that is only a drop in the bucket compared with what is needed.
Apparently, the Government is trusting to private subscriptions to tide them over the trouble, and while this should not be, it behoves the public of this country to put their hands deeper into their pockets, so that provision may be made for our gallant soldiers. We are quite of opinion that the responsibility is on the Government, but until the Government shows a tendency to shoulder its responsibility we have no right to cease our voluntary contributions ; otherwise the wounded must suffer, which is most undesirable.
