District News.

RUAWARO.

(Oum Correspondent) It is expected that the work in connection with the local private telephone service will be completed in a fortnight, when the following settlers will be connected up : —Messrs J. Comins, jr., R. G. Pbyn, A. T. Phyn. J. Furniss, J. H. Furniss, W. C. Broughton J. Rasmussen D. Marsh and Caley Bros. In spite of the letter which appeared in last week’s PRESS from the the past chairman, and present vice - chairman of the Huntly West Branch of the Farmers’ Union, there are no corrections to make to the report of the last meeting of the Union, with the exception that by a printers error, the place of meeting was given as Pukeftiiro instead of Pukenui. It is much to be regretted that an official of the Union should write an insulting letter to the Press, instead of making his complaint in the proper quarter. We have been informed by two separate settlers that Mr McEwan has the best crop of turnips in t e district. It is certainly the best one we have seen. Miss May Furniss has now about recovered from her illness, it is hoped that she will soon be strong and about again.

ROTONGARO.

Own Correspondent. Mr Alfred C. White returned to his farm on Tuesday. He has been for an extended holiday in the King Country. Miss D. Farmer is spending the vacation at her father’s farm, Hillcrest. Great activity is being displayed among the farmers round the lakes, in erecting telephones. The Government department is erecting a line to the Rotongaro past office where it is intended to plaee a bureau ; from their the farmers are taking private lines to their own ...homes, some, I understand , are going to lay lints out as far as Lake Whangape. This will be a great acquisition to the district, especially in the case of sickness. In this case the thanks of the residents are due to the Rotongaro Branch of the Farmers’Union.

One of the most prominent farmers has decided to go to the front, and serve his King and country. I hear that one of our local farmers has sold his place to a well-known business firm in Huntly. They evidently intend to go in largely for growing their own chaff, as a load of seed oats came out this week for immediate sowing. This ought to be a good proposition.

A movment is on foot to obtain a road from Westbury’s corner to Awaroa station. It is claimed ,that this will cut off about /our miles each way, this means a lotto farmers who have heavy haulage, and besides would obviate the difficulty of the Huntly railway bridge, which is very difficult to cross with a loaded cart. Several farmers carts have come to grief on it lately. WAIKOKOWAI. (Own Correspondent.) Mr A. McKinnon Senr., paid a visit to this district last weekend. Much sympathy is expressed for Messrs. McKinnon and Capstick whose sons were wounded in the Dardanelles engagement. Mr Naylor has purchased the old school building, and the money thus obtained is to be spent in beautifying the school grounds. Mr Leek has commenced preparing the school ground to sow it in grass. This is a much neededstep, not only for appearance sake but also for the safety of the children, as three or four of the children have met with rather nasty accidents, one of which needed medical attention.

The rain which fell on Monday has done a great deal of good, the grass in particular showing to advantage after it. Mr Chapman, carpenter, has resumed work at Mr McKinnon’s after being indisposed, the result of an accident. Messrs A. and D. McKinnon sent away a truck of fine cattle to the Auckland Freezing Works last Monday.
