A provincial labourer recently
lost the greater part of his furniture through a firj. The vicgr ,of the parish headed a subscription list, and the sum of nine pounds was raised for the benefit of the family. Fearing as often the case that the money would not be laid out to the best advantage, tfi• ■ reverend genileman aooompaniod the man and his,wife to furniture stores, and advised them in their purchases. They totalled to seven-and-six above the amount collected, which sum the generous vicar paid himself. “ There, now, I think we’ve finished, ” he remark-
ed to the couple. A whispered consultation between the man arid wife followed. - “The missus was wonderin’ whebf J you understood bicycles, sir,” excriaimed the man, “and she thought, if yoii did, maybe you wouldn’t mind giving me a hint about what sort of a , ..ipachina I’d better buy. You surely can’t afford to buy a bicycle, James?” remarked the amazed vicar- ■ “Oh yes, .sir ! chimed in . the wp«u % proudly .exhibit! ml a jciieq ,t for ten pounds. “We got tjjf* here from the insurance morning.”
