Huntly Town Board

The monthly meeting qf the Huntly Town Board was held last night there being present, Messrs R. Greenwell, Jas. Elliot and G. T. Horwood. Mr Greenwell was voted to the chair.

The minutes of the last meeting being disposed of, the clerk read correspondence from the Ruawaro Farmer’s Union and the Superintendent of the National Provident Fund. The former renewed a request that the Board should take up the question of the erection of sale yards at Huntly West, the Raglan County Council having refused to take the matter up.

The clerk pointed out that a paragraph had appeared in the newspapers within the last few days, stating that the same branch of the Farmers’ Union had secured a site for saleyards at Mahuta, the new station on the Awaroa line. This being so, it was thought advisable to find out what attitude the Branch was now taking up with regard to the Huntly proposal, before going further into the matter, and the clerk was instructen accordingly. The clerk pointed out that the number of persons who claimed to own bona fide cattle dogs was increasing out of all proportion to the number of cattle owned in the town and suggested that something should be done to check what appeared to be an attempt to evade the law. The Board instructed the clerk to enforce the law, the Deputy Registrar of Dogs to warn dog owners of the risk thev ran if they signed a false declaration. An informal discussion of various matters affecting the area surrounding Huntly, led to Mr Elliot giving notice to move at the next meeting of the Board “ That the Board now take into consideration the advisability of changing the status of the District.”

The Clerk reported that the only tender for carting for the current year had been opened and accepted by two memoers of the Board. The action of the two members was approved. Accounts amounting to £lO5 4s 7d were passed for payment.
