District News.

WAIKOKOWAI. (Own Correspondent). Mrs Broughton, who has been spending a few weeks in Auckland, returned home yesterday. Mrs Young who, with her children has been spending the ’Xmas, holidays with Mrs A. Jamieson, is returning home this week. Mr T. Tapp has a good crop of oats this year, and btw —tttSo" some wheat to cut. Mr F. M. Leek had the misfortune to lose a young draught horse worth £4O, last week. Going after water, the horse got bogged. The neighbours did all they could to save the animal, but without avail. The surrounding country is standing the drought well," but the birds are very hard on the turnips this year, some crops having to be sown twice. The Provincial Secretuary of the Farmers’ Union is to address the Waikokowai settlers on “The Benefit of Unions." Wo are badly in need of telephonic communication out here, having often to ride from 8 to 14 miles to the station to obtain news of goods arriving, while in case of accident it is very difficult to get in communication with a doctor. The Governnpnt were to give us communication last Autumn, but although tnere is a wire passing along the railway within two or three miles of Waikokowai Post Office, we seem as far off getting it as ever.
