Local and General.

Despite the drought, the war, and other causes which might lead to one to expect a dull Christmas, most of the business places of the town seem to be busy, and if one can judge from the time one has to wait to be served in any of the shops, the various staffs must be working at high pressure. Quite a procession of people from the country districts has passed in and out of Huntly this week, the people on the western side of the river finding the bridge a very great convenience this year, the catching of trains and meeting of visitors being quite an easy affair to what it was formerly. The Huntly Brick and Fireclay Co whoseoutput in spite of the war and general depression is up to normal has found it necessary to erect two new kilms of large capacity. The first burn in these kilns has just been completed and the result is most excellent, rhe kilns are of a new type and hold about 24000 bricks each. They have been built at a considerably higher level than the old kilns, so as to facilitate loading into the tiucks. The ! company is just completing the i manufacture ot a bench of Gas | Retorts for the Auckland Gas | Company. The Manager of that ! Company has expressed himself as . ■ v pleased with the ap* ; pea ranee of the Retorts already delivered, they being far better finished than those obtained from Germany. The retorts used by the company which is working on the Taranaki, ironsand deposit were also made in Huntly, and in a very severe test, have given complete satisfaction. The out put of firebricks at this time of the year is always very large, and Mr Greenwell has this yeat made ample provision for the demands which may be made on him during the holidays.
