Keeping Christmas.

A good deal has been said and written lately about the propriety or otherwise of 44 keeping Christmas.” It has been argued by some that, because the Empire is plunged in war, with its attendant sorrow and gloom, and because a very large number of our fellow countrymen cannot possibly have a jolly time and indeed must have a very trying one, that the rest of us should eschew the usual feasting, giving of gifts, and ether ways in which it is usual to slow goodwill at this Season. If Christmas were merely a iollification once a year, kept up just for the fun we can get out of it. one might be inclined to concur with this view, but as the Festival is a commemoration of the greatest event of human history, and the one which has had the most far-reaching effect, and as it is, or should be, a Festival of Praise &»Thanks giving, we see no reason why it should not be held this year as well as any other. Even those who are plunged in the greatest sorrow and distress can rejoice at the commemoration of the birth of Christ, and if the joviality and liberality which usually accompany the holding of this Festival must perforce be relaxed a little this year, there is no reason why the observance of Christmas should be altogether banned. Let us then keep Christmas with the same rejoicing as usual, and in no way can we better show our rejoicing than by helping those who are afflicted or those who are sacrificing themselves for their country’s sake, to feel in some measure the of w hi n > ' 1 ha Me it' r; ami ‘ i' & »ara 1
